The CFS School Catering Department
It is not an overstatement to say that over the last few years there has been a revolution in all aspects of school meals, their service and provision. National Nutritional Standards for Secondary Schools and raising our expectations has required our Catering Department to work hard to meet not only these Standards but also meet the high demands of our customers – the pupils, staff and parents at Colonel Frank Seely School.
We run our own Catering Service, with a skilled team of assistants led by our Catering Manager, Jo Cairney. This has many benefits as we have complete control over the quality of our produce, our menu planning and the cost of our meals.
One of the many ways this is being achieved is by the Department creating links with Pelican, a purchasing consortium that also offers a web based nutritional analysis software that has been tailor-made for schools and is supported by a team of registered Dieticians and Nutritionists. All our recipes on our three weekly menus are analysed by the nutritional team at Pelican to ensure they meet the national nutritional guidelines.

The School operates a cashless system for school dining which has cut down queuing times, gives parents more control over where pupils spend their dinner money and on what, and has eliminated bullying for dinner money. The system gives anonymity to pupils on free school meals. Only catering staff will have access to the information as the free meal is automatically added to the pupil’s daily account.
The cashless system is biometric (using a dermal scan). Pupils who would prefer to use a pin number can choose this option, but obviously this takes longer to process than the scan.
Preferred methods to credit your child’s dinner account are:
- Online – through our school website – please click here to be transferred to the online payment site. Credit is automatically added to your child’s account in a matter of hours.
- By cheque – made payable to ‘Colonel Frank Seely School’. Please remember to put your child’s name on the back of the cheque so that Catering Staff can credit the correct account.
There are also cash revaluation machines in two areas of the school where pupils can credit their own account. However, this does require pupils bringing cash into school which the school discourages.

Food Outlets and Services at Colonel Frank Seely School
Good food provision in schools has been shown to lead not only to healthier children, but to improved attainment. We hope our plans for provision at CFS will help to create a generation of pupils who enjoy food that makes them healthier, more successful and, most importantly, happier.
The break times where food provision is available are:
- 11:05 – 11:20 – Morning break
- 12:20 – 13:00 – Lunch break
Family Dining – Year 7 & Year 8
Lunchtime for Year 7 and 8 pupils is an extension of the classroom, encouraging conversation between school staff and pupils. Seated on tables of 12 the atmosphere in this area provides a calm lunchtime atmosphere. The idea is to improve speaking and listening skills for our pupils which can only benefit their attainment across all areas of their school life.
Our Family Dining Area is based in the Main School Hall serving healthy meal options which are all plated from a counter service. All our meals are cooked in our kitchens.
It is expected that all parents will commit to the Family Dining experience for their pupils. Parents who would prefer to send their child with a healthy packed lunch may do so. Pupils bringing a lunch from home will also be involved in the family dining experience.
The cost for a 2 course meal with water is £2.20 per day, payable in advance via the online cashless system.
If you would like your child to have a healthy breaktime snack in addition to their lunchtime meal this can be purchased separately or at the special daily rate of £2.50.
Colonel’s Café – Years 9, 10 & 11 plus Sixth Form
This is a busy 150 seat, counter service restaurant which serves healthy meal options which are all plated. This is popular with the pupils who want a substantial meal with the greatest choice of options. It is also an area where they can sit and enjoy their meals with their friends in pleasant surroundings. All our meals are cooked in our kitchens.
By request of pupils there is also the option to Supersize a main course portion size for an additional 30p.
A 2 course meal deal is available for £2.20 per day.
A Standard Main Course is £1.70.
Supersized Main Course is £2.00.
Our only takeaway facility, Frankie’s serves directly to the pupils on the social area and field at the front of the school and is ever popular for those who wish to enjoy their leisure time outside or are on the way to one of the many lunchtime clubs. They can choose from the same meal deal and standard choices in Colonel’s Café but this is served on a disposable tray.
We don’t forget about our Sixth Form based at William Lee. They are able to access the meals in Colonel’s Café. We have also developed a slightly different menu for Sixth Form which allows them to order lunch to be delivered.

We are very proud of the food we produce in school, and following many requests we have had from local businesses and visitors to the school we are happy to announce we can now provide food for you to enjoy at home. From a Friday night takeaway, catering for business meetings, or larger parties we will be happy to discuss your requirements.
